我们现在应该提倡的新文学，简单的说一句，是“人的文学”。应该排斥的，便是反对的非人的文学。

新旧这名称，本来很不妥当，其实“太阳底下何尝有新的东西？”思想道理，只有是非，并无新旧。要说是新，也单是新发见的新，不是新发明的新。“新大陆”是在十五世纪中，被哥仑布发见，但这地面是古来早已存在。电是在十八世纪中，被弗兰克林发见，但这物事也是古来早已存在。无非以前的人，不能知道，遇见哥仑布与弗兰克林才把他看出罢了。真理的发见，也是如此。真理永远存在，并无时间的限制，只因我们自己愚昧，闻道太迟，离发见的时候尚近，所以称他新。其实他原是极古的东西，正如新大陆同电一般，早在这宇宙之内，倘若将他当作新鲜果子、时式衣裳一样看待，那便大错了。譬如现在说“人的文学”，这一句话，岂不也像时髦。却不知世上生了人，便同时生了人道。无奈世人无知，偏不肯体人类的意志，走这正路，却迷入兽道鬼道里去，旁皇了多年，才得出来。正如人在白昼时候，闭着眼乱闯，末后睁开眼睛，才晓得世上有这样好阳光；其实太阳照临，早已如此，已有了许多年代了。
